# GIF compressor: compress a GIF and reduce its file size

> Compress a GIF and reduce its file size in your browser. Scale it down, use fewer colors or drop frames, and see the result and how much smaller it is before you download. Nothing is uploaded.

Drop in a GIF and it's compressed right away. Change the size, colors or frames to make it smaller, and the preview and file size update.

Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

## How to use it

1. **Add a GIF.** Drop the GIF. It's compressed in your browser at 128 colors to start, and isn't uploaded.
2. **Make it smaller.** Pick a smaller size, fewer colors or fewer frames. Each change compresses it again and shows the new size.
3. **Download.** When the preview still looks right and the size fits, download the GIF.

## What makes a GIF large

A GIF stores every frame as a picture of up to 256 colors and compresses each one. Its file size grows with the number of pixels, the number of frames and how busy each frame is, so there are three ways to shrink it:

- Size: 50% of the width and height is a quarter of the pixels, the biggest cut of the three.
- Colors: fewer colors make each frame simpler to compress, but smooth gradients can show bands.
- Frames: keeping 1 in 2 halves the frames. Each one stays on screen longer, so the loop keeps its length, but motion looks choppier.

## How this compressor works

Every setting re-encodes the whole GIF in your browser. Pixels that don't change from one frame to the next aren't stored again, so a GIF with a still background can shrink even at full size.

A GIF with see-through parts keeps them, with each frame stored in full. Reading GIF frames needs a browser such as Chrome or Edge.

## Questions

### How do I make a GIF smaller?

Start with the size: 75% or 50% cuts the most. If it's still too big, try 64 or 32 colors, then keep 1 in 2 frames.

### Does compressing lower the quality?

A smaller size is less sharp, fewer colors can band gradients, and fewer frames make motion choppier. At 100%, 256 colors and every frame, the GIF stays closest to the original.

### Why isn't the compressed GIF smaller?

The original was probably compressed well already. Lower the size, colors or frames until the result is smaller.

### Does it keep transparency?

Yes. See-through parts of the GIF stay see-through.

### Is my GIF uploaded?

No. It's compressed in your browser and never leaves your computer.
