Drop in HEIC photos from an iPhone and get JPGs that Windows, Android, editors and upload forms all open. Several at once is fine, and the photos never leave your browser.

Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

## How to use it

1. **Add HEIC photos.** Drop one or several. The decoder loads with the first photo, then each is converted in turn.
2. **Pick the quality.** High suits most photos. Best keeps the most detail; Smaller file is easier to send.
3. **Download.** Save a single JPG, or all of them in one ZIP.

## Why iPhone photos are HEIC

iPhones save photos as HEIF, in .HEIC files, when the camera format is High Efficiency. Apple says HEIF takes less space than JPEG at the same visual quality. Apple devices open it, but Chrome, Firefox and many Windows and Android apps and upload forms don't.

Chrome can't decode HEIC itself, so this tool reads it with libheif, an open-source HEIF decoder, then draws the photo and saves it as JPG.

## Getting JPGs from the iPhone directly

To shoot JPG from now on, open Settings > Camera > Formats and choose Most Compatible. Apple notes that photos shared by AirDrop, Messages or email, or imported to a computer, may be converted to JPEG on the way when the other side needs it.

On a Mac, Photos and Preview open HEIC and save JPG with File > Export, and sips does it from Terminal:

- sips -s format jpeg IMG_0001.HEIC --out IMG_0001.jpg

## What the JPG keeps

The JPG has the photo's full resolution and is turned the way it's shown on the iPhone. It doesn't keep the photo's metadata, such as the location, or the extra brightness an iPhone shows for HDR photos. A Live Photo becomes its still image.

## Questions

### Are my photos uploaded?

No. The HEIC is decoded and the JPG is written in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, which also means private photos stay private.

### Does it work in Chrome and on Windows?

Yes. The tool brings its own HEIC decoder, so it works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox as well as Safari.

### Why does the first photo take a moment?

The decoder is downloaded when you add the first HEIC, about 800 KB. After that, each photo takes about a second on a recent computer.

### Is the location removed?

Yes. The JPG is drawn from the pixels, so the location, camera details and other metadata aren't copied.

### Can I get PNG instead?

Yes. Switch Convert to PNG. PNG keeps every pixel without loss but is several times larger than JPG.

### Can I convert a whole batch?

Yes. Drop them together, and the download button saves every JPG in one ZIP.
