Drop in a MOV from your iPhone, Mac or camera and save its sound as an MP3 that plays everywhere. The file is converted in your browser and never uploaded.

Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

## How to use it

1. **Add a MOV.** Videos shot on an iPhone, Mac screen recordings and QuickTime exports all work. MP4 and other videos do too.
2. **Pick a bitrate.** 128 kbps for speech, 192 kbps for music and mixes, 320 kbps for the highest MP3 quality.
3. **Convert and download.** Play the MP3 to check it, then download it.

## MOV files from a Mac or an iPhone

MOV is Apple's QuickTime format, and MP4 was built on it, so the two usually hold the same AAC audio. Where your MOV came from tells you what to expect:

- Videos shot with the iPhone Camera app are MOV files with sound from the phone's microphones.
- Mac screen recordings made with the Screenshot toolbar or QuickTime Player are MOV files, and they only have sound if you picked a microphone under Options before recording. Without one, there's no audio to convert.
- Renaming a .mov to .mp3 doesn't convert it. The sound stays inside a video file that most players won't open as audio.

## Other ways on a Mac

- QuickTime Player: open the MOV and choose File > Export As > Audio Only. You get an M4A, not an MP3, which most apps and phones also play.
- ffmpeg, for one file: ffmpeg -i input.mov -vn -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k audio.mp3
- ffmpeg, for every MOV in a folder: for f in *.mov; do ffmpeg -i "$f" -vn -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k "${f%.mov}.mp3"; done

## Questions

### Is my video uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the video and encodes the MP3 itself, with the LAME encoder running on your computer. Nothing is sent anywhere.

### My screen recording says it has no audio. Why?

Mac screen recordings only capture sound when a microphone is chosen under Options in the Screenshot toolbar or QuickTime Player. A recording made without one has no audio track.

### Which bitrate should I use for an iPhone video?

For talking, 128 kbps (about 1.0 MB a minute) is enough. For music or a recording you'll edit, use 192 or 320 kbps.

### Do I need to convert the MOV to MP4 first?

No. Drop the MOV in as it is. The tool reads the audio straight out of it.
