Drop in an MP3 and get a 16-bit WAV for an editor, sampler or device that asks for WAV. The file never leaves your browser.

Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

## How to use it

1. **Add the MP3.** Drop the file or choose it. WAV is already selected.
2. **Convert.** The MP3 is decoded in your browser, which takes a few seconds for a song.
3. **Download.** Play the WAV to check it, then download it.

## What changes and what doesn't

The WAV holds the MP3's sound decoded to plain samples: 16-bit, at the MP3's sample rate and channels. It sounds exactly like the MP3. Detail the MP3 dropped when it was made doesn't come back.

What you gain is a file every audio tool reads the same way, which you can cut, process and save again without another round of MP3 compression.

## File size

WAV isn't compressed, so stereo at 44.1 kHz takes about 10 MB a minute, roughly seven times a 192 kbps MP3. A four-minute song comes to about 40 MB.

## On a Mac or with ffmpeg

macOS comes with afconvert, which writes 16-bit WAV from Terminal; ffmpeg does the same by default:

- afconvert -f WAVE -d LEI16 song.mp3 song.wav
- ffmpeg -i song.mp3 song.wav

## Questions

### Is my audio uploaded?

No. The MP3 is decoded and the WAV is written in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.

### Does converting MP3 to WAV improve the sound?

No. The WAV sounds the same as the MP3. It just won't lose more when you edit and save it.

### What format is the WAV?

16-bit PCM at the MP3's sample rate, usually 44.1 kHz, in mono or stereo like the MP3. Almost every editor and device reads it.

### Why is the WAV so big?

WAV stores every sample uncompressed: about 10 MB a minute for stereo at 44.1 kHz.

### Can I convert other audio to WAV?

Yes. M4A, FLAC and Ogg files work too, as long as your browser can play them.
