Drop in an animated WebP and get a GIF that plays where WebP doesn't. Each frame keeps its timing, and the file never leaves your browser.

Runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

## How to use it

1. **Add the WebP.** Drop an animated or still WebP. It's converted as soon as it's read.
2. **Check the size.** GIF files run larger than WebP. Lower the size, colors or frames if it's too big.
3. **Download.** Watch the GIF play, then download it.

## What changes from WebP to GIF

Animated WebP and GIF both store frames with their own display times, so the motion and timing carry over. What GIF can't hold is as much color: up to 256 colors a frame, where WebP keeps full color, so smooth gradients can band.

Transparency changes too. WebP can make an edge partly see-through; GIF pixels are either clear or solid, so soft edges turn hard.

## Keeping the GIF small

Google says animated WebP files are smaller than the same animation as GIF, so expect the GIF to come out larger. Three settings bring it down: a smaller frame cuts the most, fewer colors next, and keeping one frame in two or three makes the motion choppier but the file much smaller.

## Questions

### Is my WebP uploaded?

No. The frames are decoded and the GIF is written in your browser.

### Why is the GIF bigger than the WebP?

WebP compresses animation far better than GIF. Pick a smaller size, fewer colors or fewer frames to shrink it.

### Does the animation keep its speed?

Yes. Each frame keeps its own display time. Keeping one frame in two or three lengthens the frames left so the total time stays the same.

### What happens to transparency?

Clear areas stay clear. Partly see-through pixels become clear or solid, since GIF has nothing in between.

### Which browsers can convert?

Ones that can read WebP frames one by one, such as Chrome and Edge. The tool tells you if yours can't.
