Discord's help center gives the free upload limit as 20 MB, up from 10 MB in August 2026. Nitro Basic raises it to 50 MB and Nitro to up to 1 GB. Discord also notes it's testing other limits, so some accounts may see more.
Discord now checks the size before compressing, on mobile as on desktop, so the file has to be under the limit as it is. Older guides that say 8 MB or 10 MB are out of date.
The tool keeps a tenth of the limit back, gives 128 kbps to the sound and spreads the rest over the clip. A 30-second clip gets about 4.9 Mbps, enough for 1080p. A two-minute clip gets about 1.1 Mbps, so the tool steps it down to 480p to keep it clean.
Trim a clip to the moment you want to share before compressing. Half the length is twice the bitrate.
Two passes hit a size most closely. Set -b:v to the video bitrate the tool shows for your clip:
- ffmpeg -y -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -b:v 2600k -pass 1 -an -f null /dev/null && ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -b:v 2600k -pass 2 -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.mp4

Questions
20 MB on a free account, 50 MB with Nitro Basic and up to 1 GB with Nitro, according to Discord's help center.
No. Discord's help center gives 20 MB for free accounts since August 2026, up from 10 MB.
Not by this tool. It compresses in your browser; the clip only goes to Discord when you send it there.
A long clip doesn't have enough bits for its full frame at 20 MB, so the tool steps the frame down to keep the picture clean. Trim it to keep more.
Yes. The result is an H.264 MP4 with AAC sound, which Discord plays inline.
