Crop it from the middle to 1080 × 1920 or 1440 × 2560 as a JPG.
Stories fill a phone screen top to bottom, so they're 9:16. Meta's specs for Story ads recommend 1080 × 1920 pixels and give 600 × 1067 as the minimum; its Ads Guide also lists 1440 × 2560 for image ads. Instagram doesn't publish separate numbers for regular Stories, and the same 9:16 sizes are what fill the screen there too.
An image that isn't 9:16 won't fill the screen as it is, so crop it to 9:16 before you post if you want edge to edge.
Meta asks advertisers to keep roughly the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% on each side free of text, logos and other key elements, so the profile row and buttons don't cover them. At 1080 × 1920 that's about 269 pixels at the top, 672 at the bottom and 65 on each side.
The zone is set out for ads, but it's a safe rule for any Story: keep what people must read inside the outline.
The template is a 1080 × 1920 PNG that's clear in the safe zone and shaded outside it. Put it as the top layer in Canva, Figma or Photoshop, design underneath, then hide it before you export.
