More about this tool
- 1
Add a video
Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or any video your browser can play. It isn't uploaded.
- 2
Mark the clip
Type the start and end in seconds, or play to a moment and use the player time. A GIF covers up to 15 seconds.
- 3
Make the GIF
Pick a width from 320 to 640 pixels and 10 to 20 frames a second, make the GIF, check it, and download it.
A GIF stores every frame as its own image with at most 256 colours, so it's often many times larger than the video it came from. Size grows with width × height × frames.
- Shorten the clip first: it's the biggest lever. Two to five seconds is plenty for a reaction or a product loop.
- Halving the width cuts the pixels a frame to a quarter. 320 pixels is enough for chat apps and docs.
- 10 fps is fine for screen recordings and slow motion; 20 fps reads smoother for fast movement.
- Busy footage with grain, gradients or camera shake compresses worst. Flat screen recordings compress best.
If you'd rather do it on the command line, ffmpeg makes a good GIF in two passes, picking a palette first:
- ffmpeg -ss 2 -t 4 -i input.mp4 -vf "fps=15,scale=480:-1:flags=lanczos,palettegen" palette.png
- ffmpeg -ss 2 -t 4 -i input.mp4 -i palette.png -lavfi "fps=15,scale=480:-1:flags=lanczos[x];[x][1:v]paletteuse" out.gif
- Use ffmpeg when you need a clip longer than this tool allows, dithering options, or a batch of files.

Questions
No. Your browser reads the video, draws each frame and builds the GIF itself. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Any video your browser can play: MP4 and MOV with H.264, and WebM, in most browsers. If a file won't open, convert it to MP4 with H.264 and try again.
Up to 15 seconds. Longer GIFs get too large to post or send, and a short loop usually works better anyway.
A GIF can only hold 256 colours. The tool picks the 256 that best fit your clip, but smooth gradients and skin tones can show banding.
Yes, it loops forever, as GIFs on most sites and chat apps do.
