Download to fit
Pick a size. The photo is cut from the middle to that shape and saved as a JPG.
Instagram shares photos at up to 1080 pixels wide. A photo between 320 and 1080 pixels wide keeps its resolution as long as its shape is between 1.91:1 and 3:4; a photo outside that range is cropped to fit. Narrower than 320 pixels, it's enlarged; wider than 1080, it's scaled down to 1080.
At 1080 pixels wide, that range runs from 566 to 1440 pixels tall:
- Portrait 3:4, 1080 × 1440: the tallest shape Instagram keeps whole.
- Portrait 4:5, 1080 × 1350: the portrait size most guides still give; it's inside the range too.
- Square 1:1, 1080 × 1080.
- Landscape 1.91:1, 1080 × 566: the widest shape Instagram keeps whole.
A taller post takes up more of the screen as people scroll the feed, so portrait is the usual choice for photos of people and products. Landscape suits wide scenes and screenshots, and square sits between the two.
Upload at least 1080 pixels wide. A narrower photo is shared at its own width and looks soft on large phones.

1080 pixels wide, in a shape between 1.91:1 and 3:4. For portrait photos that's 1080 × 1440 (3:4) or 1080 × 1350 (4:5); for square, 1080 × 1080.
No. Instagram's Help Center now lists 3:4 as the tallest shape it keeps whole, which is 1080 × 1440. 4:5 posts are still fine; they're just not the tallest any more.
Its shape is outside 1.91:1 to 3:4, so Instagram cut it to the nearest shape it supports. The preview shows which part goes; download it at one of the sizes here and you choose the crop instead.
No. Reels and Stories are full-screen 9:16, 1080 × 1920. This tool covers photo posts and carousel photos.
