More about this tool
- 1
Add a video
Drop any video your browser can play. It's read in the browser and isn't uploaded.
- 2
Save one frame
Play or scrub to the moment you want, then save that frame as a PNG or JPG.
- 3
Or extract many
Pick an interval from 0.5 to 5 seconds, extract, then click a frame to save it or download them all as a ZIP.
PNG keeps every pixel as decoded from the video, so it's the one to use for a thumbnail you'll edit further or a frame you want to compare closely. A 1080 × 1920 PNG is often a few megabytes.
JPG is saved at 92% quality and is usually several times smaller. Use it when you're collecting many frames for reference or sending them to someone.
If you already have the tools installed, these do the same job. Each has a case where it's the better pick.
- QuickTime Player on a Mac: pause on the frame, choose Edit > Copy, then in Preview choose File > New from Clipboard. Quick for one frame, with no interval option.
- ffmpeg, for one frame at an exact time: ffmpeg -ss 00:00:12.5 -i input.mp4 -frames:v 1 frame.png
- ffmpeg, for one frame per second of a long video: ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf fps=1 frame-%04d.png. It has no frame limit, so use it when you need hundreds.
Questions
The video's own resolution. A 1080 × 1920 video gives 1080 × 1920 frames, with nothing scaled down.
Up to 100 per run, because each frame is held at full size until you save it. For a long video, pick a longer interval or use the ffmpeg command in the guide above.
It's the frame your browser is showing at that time. Browsers can land a frame apart when seeking, so if you need one exact frame by number, use ffmpeg.
Any video your browser can play. If a file won't open, convert it to MP4 with H.264 video and try again.
No. The video is read in your browser, frames are drawn there, and the ZIP is built there too.
