RPM is what you earn per 1,000 views, after YouTube's share, from ads, YouTube Premium, memberships and Super Chat. CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube's share. RPM is lower than CPM because the share is already taken out and it counts every view, including the ones with no ad.
So use RPM here, and don't take a CPM figure from an article as your RPM: it would overstate what you earn.
Long videos earn a share of the ads shown on them: creators get 55% of that revenue. Shorts are paid from a pool: each country's Shorts ad revenue is shared by engaged views among monetizing creators, and creators keep 45% of what's allocated to them. Your RPM already reflects both, so the calculator doesn't apply them again.
Because the two are paid differently, YouTube Studio lets you see Shorts and long videos separately. Estimate each with its own RPM.
You earn from ads once you join the YouTube Partner Program: 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. From February 1, 2027, the Shorts pool also needs 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Until then there's no RPM of your own. RPM depends on who watches, where they live, the time of year and how many views carry ads, so try a wide range rather than one number.
